Would you ever have guessed that these extraordinary flowers belong to a species of rhododendron? Rhododendron spinuliferum (see photo) is the only variety with such mostly bright red, upright petals tightly enclosing the anthers and style. Watery, sweet nectar forms at the base of the flowers, serving as food for not only insects but also some species of birds. This is just one of many unusual rhododendron species here in the Himalayas.
