Butterflies

Watch and be amazed

Fluttering diversity

Watch butterflies

Peleides blue morphos shimmer in the air, atlas moths show off their impressive size and the caterpillars of owl butterflies munch their way through their favourite plants. There are hundreds of exotic butterflies fluttering through the Tropical Greenhouse. The caterpillars, pupae and butterflies/moths of up to 80 species are an expression of the diversity in the rainforest. They fly close around you – and some might even land on your shoulder.

Sweet and liquid

Be amazed

Most tropical butterflies love anything sweet and liquid, which is why you will see a number of feeding stations with fermenting fruit and nectar substitute here. The flowers in the tropical greenhouse are also an important source of food, just as they would be in the wild. Every time they land on a leaf or flower, the butterflies inspect it closely to see whether it might be a suitable place for them or their caterpillars to feed. They do so using their feet, which they use to “taste”.
